Overview

This is the story of a Bengali tiger named Tuki who organizes the Animal Brigades that help win democracy for Bangladesh.

Tuki is a tiger cub whose mother Anni has been taken away to a zoo, and then sold to a far-away circus. Along with her brother Raj and their disabled grandfather Baba, Tuki is determined to reunite their tiger family.

Tuki has many friends in the jungle, including elephants, monkeys, birds, and water buffalo. She is especially fond of Dr. Dixit, the human conservationist who saved her mother's life, as well as his two children, whom she found lost in the jungle. They have to watch out for poachers, soldiers and snakes.

"I learned so much I didn't know about the evolution of Bangladesh and the endangered tigers. The story kept my attention so well that I didn't realize how much I learned until the end. I want to see this on my library bookshelf!"

- Ariabella, age 10, 5th grade student

"The story helps make sense of the way the sub-continent of India transformed into three different countries in a way I won't forget. I have a new appreciation for tigers – I had not realized they were endangered, and now I want to know what more we can do to protect them"

- Marcello, age 13, 7th grade student

"This story is a fast-paced blend of fact and fantasy as the young tiger heroine sets out together with her tiger brother and two human children to find their parents, and land in the middle of a cyclone and the Bangladeshi war for liberation. It is full of action, adventure, vivid descriptions of the Sundarban jungle, and proof of the powers of love, friendship and the quest for freedom. Readers learn how the lives of humans and wildlife are interdependent and why conservation matters. I enjoyed reading it!"

- Louise Chawla, Professor Emerita, Environmental Design Program, University of Colorado Boulder
